London’s new mayor has said he will visit Gallows Corner to see traffic problems for himself.
Mr Khan said: “I’m aware of the safety issues at this junction including high instances of collisions.
“In five years there have been 78 personal injury collisions, three of them serious.
“I’m aware TfL is currently working with the London Borough of Havering to improve this junction.
“No decision has been made about the long term. TfL has assured me they will produce a plan for Gallows Corner that will look at what will be done.”
Keith Prince replied: “I’m sure it’s not your intention to be a Zone 1 mayor.
“Will you agree to accompany me to Gallows Corner to see what some of the issues are and we can also explain some of the solutions we would like to put forward?”
To which Mr Khan replied: “Yes, let’s do it.”
Mr Prince has called for a second flyover to be built, arguing that it is the most viable long-term solution to traffic and safety issues.
Transport for London held a consultation between January and March this year about its plans to make the junction – which incorporates a five arm roundabout and flyover – safer by repainting lines, increasing the size of the roundabout and extending the 30mph approach on the A12 and A127.
The plans were branded “a waste of time” by Romford MP Andrew Rosindell who has had called for an underpass to be built to ease congestion.
The existing flyover was built as a temporary measure in the 1970s.
